I've a biased view when it relates to answering the question that's the title of this article, and I know it. At most, I can simply hope to adequately explain my position that bare wood furniture is, dollar for dollar, the far superior value, but let's have a look at a few of the reasons why and see if I can not convince you.
Firstly, bare wood furniture is built out of ...well, wood. Not pressboard, not particle board, not sawdust and Elmer's attempting to pass itself off as wood, but actual, honest to goodness wood! Next time you are at your local chain store, ask them to show you all their "solid wood" furniture and actually look it over. Most of the time, I'm betting you will find pressboard someplace.
Next, bare wood furniture costs lower. Often a lot less. Yes, you've to "do something" to it (and we'll get to that in a moment), but that is more of a chance gained than lost. Economic times being what they are, most everyone is trying to save money where they can, and this looks like a great tradeoff to me.
Third, bare wood furniture permits you to put your imaginative stamp on it as you finish the piece, rather than getting anything "just like every 3rd house in the country." Express yourself! Be unique! Create something that's real "you."
Fourth, bare wood furniture is more long-lasting. That's as, ultimately, all that pressboard actually is not terribly rigid. All wood furniture is as rough and durable as it's appealing.
Fifth, bare wood furniture looks better with time. With appropriate care at its finishing, you can make an heirloom piece that will possibly serve for decades. Most shop purchased furniture just becomes "used furniture" after 3-5 years. Great difference.
I am in love with unfinished furniture
with my first piece (a 6' tall, oak, double bookcase). As we slowly replace the furniture in our home, as much as possible, we are going with bare wood furniture. It is more affordable, higher quality, more stable, and entirely exclusive.
