IM - Great Debates I: Duplicate Content Is Bad

The rise of article spinners and associated technologies in the web marketing industry has come about precisely because of this position in the "great debate." Everyone is terrified that even if Google does not yet have the capacity of detecting when you have posted an article to one place or another, that they'll eventually be able to do so, and when that day arrives, the fear is, and the thinking goes that the search engine giant will greatly discount the weight of any backlinks inserted in, or appended to (through resource box) your duplicated content.

By extension then, if a significant portion of your online income comes from keywords you've achieved solid ranking for using the same tired couple of articles, posted out to virtually hundreds of different places, then on the day that Google makes this dreaded change, your income will decline in the best case, and in the worst, Big G will see you as a spammer, and simply de-index most or all of your websites.

That, at the root, is the greatest worry behind this particular position in the great duplicate content debate, and it does have some compelling features to its argument. Because Google always plays things so close to the vest, and has a long history of closing loopholes and making it significantly hard to "game the system," the thinking is, at least on a specific level, sound, because it can easily be argued that this IS a classic case of gaming the system (especially in light of article directory submission software that can literally offer you a push-button way to send a single article to a thousand or even more directories for publication).

The most obvious and often cited defense, then, is to use OTHER technologies, like article spinners which, to varying degrees (and mostly dependent on the expertise of the an individual using the spinner) generates semi-unique variations of the article in question that (it is hoped) will make the articles more tasty to Google. Of course, the obvious counter is that this too, is a form of gaming the system. It merely takes the game to the next level, yet be that as it may, the present thinking of individuals who fear duplicate content in the world of internet marketing (and thus, the relative popularity of spinners) is that its days are numbered, and article spinners are the answer to getting and keeping yourself right with Google in the end.
