News is commonly defined by a glossary as "a report of latest events or previously unknown information". Contradictory to it having a "s", it isn't a plural noun. Thus generally, news is totally new. It is what is new. It is what exactly is happening nowadays. However, to be more specific, news is information which is meant for a particular audience. For example, what happens in Mexico is not really that much of a big problem in a far away place, let's say, Africa.
A commentary, are highly-intellectual remarks made by people on a specific text or issue. For instance, a commentary about cholesterol may focus on the types of cholesterol, which is good and bad, and what their dissimilarities are. They are not just some random comments like we find in many blog sites these days. Rather, they are highly rational and well-thought of comments that add value to the text, as well as to a news or news article.
News and Commentary work hand in hand in a paper. Without one, the other would exist. However, the newspaper would not be complete with no informative news as well as witty and entertaining commentary.
