What Happens When You Have Your Natural Teeth Taken Out And Replaced Using Dentures

When I was a young girl I thought that only old people wore dentures. After all, my grandma had upper dentures, and all of grandpa's teeth were duplicate. I never thought that I could also be wearing dentures while I was still a youngster.

I was thirty three years old when I had the remainder of my teeth removed, all nine of them. My teeth have never been healthy and they were eventually removed one by one. Except for the four front upper teeth which went together and the new teeth were immediately set in their spot and joined with the teeth next to them. But, finally they all had to go.

When the last nine teeth were removed I had the dentures set immediately. I did not want to be without teeth.

Somehow I believed it would be tough to get used to having new teeth in my mouth after being without them for quite a while. Eventually, I found this to be a fact. By having the dentures placed directly upon extraction, I was never without teeth hence the dentures are as if my natural teeth.

I have to admit that having the dentures placed immediately on extraction was difficult but only because I could not clean them myself for about three weeks. I had to go to the dentist's office where he pulled out the denture, cleaned it and returned it, all through the time that the gums were curing.

After three weeks I was in a position to do this myself. In the beginning the task was an odd one. Removing the dentures and scrubbing them and replacing them. But it did have its one light experience.

At that time my youngest son was about four years old. He wandered into the bathroom one day just as I was scrubbing my denture. He stood there with his eyes and mouth widely open, then turned around and ran outside the house as fast as he could. He ran along the block to my girlfriend's house shouting as loud as he could "Aunt Mary, Aunt Mary, guess what my mommy can do?" When he stated her what I could do she walked him to my residence and we both explained dentures to him. That I was not magically taking out my natural teeth. We still chuckle about that, so many years after.

I still believe that the most useful way to place your denture is soon after extraction (sometimes called same day dentures nowadays) because you are never without teeth. You never ever have to go through that period of getting used to having teeth, as you might need to do if you go without dentures when your gums are healing. What surprises me most is that when I do have to go without my dentures (surgery, etc.) my jaw really hurts since it has actually never been closed without having teeth. That tight close is always very painful.

I have realized that dentures are not only for old people as they are made for youngsters too. As mentioned, at age thirty three I got my upper dentures. Since then I figured out that there are children that always have to have dentures because of accidents or illness.
